SILK
ROAD MUSIC- An Inter Cultural mix of styles MAIN STAGE SATURDAY STREET FESTIVAL EVENT : June 18: 1:20pm included in wristband price of $20 |
|
Silk Road Music was formed in 1991 by virtuoso
pipa player Qiu Xia He (Chu Sha Her), who came to Canada in 1989 after
teaching at the Xian Music Academy of China. With thousands of concerts
around the world, the aim of finding the perfect musical moment still
remains the goal. Weaving the 2000 year old Chinese Pipa into the magic carpet of music, while Andre Thibault is plucking the Spanish guitar and oud, and Ron Hadley pounding the Jazz piano, this concert sparks and boils like music is supposed to: Live! Silk Road Music's goal has always been to develop new expressions for intercultural music, featuring compositions that enhance the understanding of Chinese and World culture. Its musicians explore and extend the range of the ancient pipa, from classical Chinese to modern works of their own and other composers. Silk Road Music is the only Chinese ensemble in Canada that has twice won a West Coast Music Award and also several Canadian music awards nominations. It's music has been featured on CBC, BBC International, Radio France. It has toured many festivals in Europe, US and Canada, invited as guests with Symphony orchestras including Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Calispell Montana US. It also performed in hundreds of Schools, senior Centers and conventions around the World. For more details in French, Chinese and Spanish go to silkroadmusic.ca |
DANIEL BRUBECK QUARTET MAIN STAGE SATURDAY STREET FESTIVAL EVENT : June 18: 2:25pm included in wristband price of $20 |
|
The Sunshine Coast is known for its amazing
physical beauty and home of an ernormous number of internationally known
creative artists, both visual, written and performing. Daniel Brubeck
moved to the 'Coast' a few years ago and we feel so fortunate to have
him in our musical community. The Dan Brubeck Quartet is Dan's exciting new group, originally created for performing the music on the "Celebrating the Music and Lyrics of his Dad and Mom, Dave & Iola Brubeck" 2 CD set. The group features the exceptional vocal talent of Adam Thomas (also on bass), with saxophonist Steve Kaldestad, and pianist Tony Foster. Dan was a highly energetic child who found his calling at the trap set. Mentored by two consummate polyrhythmic masters, Joe Morello and Alan Dawson (at the Berklee College of Music), he was working professionally before he finished his teens. Over the years Dan was featured on nearly a dozen albums with his father, and toured widely with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, including many appearances with the world's leading orchestras. He's been an integral part of the various Brubeck bands, including the Darius Brubeck Ensemble, Two Generations of Brubeck, and the New Brubeck Quartet. Dan's drumming style is both mesmerizing and unparalleled, and his distinctive, and astonishingly textured drum solos have received standing ovations all over the world! His uncanny sense of timing and use of odd time signatures, combining melodic phrases with polyrhythms that often stretch far beyond the bar line, has earned the respect of many jazz critics worldwide.
