MICHAEL
OCCHIPINTI and THE SICILIAN JAZZ PROJECT featuring PILAR AND DON BYRON Concert !! Friday June 19: 8:00pm : Gibsons Pubic Market: $25 |
|||
The Sicilian Jazz Project with guests Pilar
and Don Byron is a group like no other. Featuring the unforgettable voice
of Italy's Pilar, the inventive virtuosity of American clarinetist Don
Byron, and the unique compositions and arrangements of Canada's Michael
Occhipinti, the ensemble challenges musical borders, and is utterly compelling
whether performing as a small group or as a large chamber ensemble with
string quartet. The Sicilian Jazz Project's debut received stellar reviews
and the new album (spring 2015) builds on a unique exploration of work
songs, chamber music, improvisation, and the poetic sounds of worlds old
and new. Pilar, Don Byron and the SJP are the stunning sound of brilliant
musicians from different backgrounds coming together to create passionate
music. "This is really why we listen to music: to be surprised and lifted up, stripped of our preconceptions and left breathless by hearing something brand new." Bill Bentley - Sonic Boomers. " Occhipinti has crafted this music with uncommon perfection." Raul d'Gama Rose, All About Jazz . Click here for more info. |

ORKESTAR
SLIVOVICA BALKAN BRASS BAND BUS STOP STAGE SATURDAY STREET FESTIVAL EVENT : June 20 between acts included in wristband price of $20 |
|
This group was so much fun with amazing music last year we just had to have them back. Orkestar Slivovica is Vancouver's home-grown Balkan Brass band, playing wedding and festive music from Serbia, Macedonia, and other distant and mysterious lands, where it is known as Trubachi and no such occasion is complete without it. The 8-12 piece brass ensemble plays and sings a diverse repertoire, from insanely fast dance tunes to heartwrenching songs, often in crooked rhythms and exotic scales. Take a New Orleans second line marching band and send them to a Roma village in Southern Serbia, feed them cevapcic and sljivovica for a year while exposing them to 100 3-day weddings. Sure to put oomph in your step and a very big smile on your face. Get up, turn around from the main stage and take in this very large group of funtastic musicians. Check them out at orkestarslivovica.org |
THE
HI-FI - A New Orleans Inspired Funk Brouhaha MAIN STAGE SATURDAY STREET FESTIVAL EVENT : June 20: 1:30pm included in wristband price of $20 |
|
They may be unknown to the Sunshine Coast but
certainly won't be after you hear them the first time. Join drummer/singer Damian Graham, Nick La Riviere, trombone, Ryan Tandy, bass and special guest "Art Booker" on piano as they bring you an afternoon of music you won't soon forget. Mixing it up from Dixieland, Professor Longhair to whatever they come up with next and get ready to swing. "When we get together and play we have this very relaxed and fun experience. Everyone is listening to each other so intently and there is this ability to move where the music goes. And if it heads straight into a wall we are all able to laugh it off and start again. Maybe the wall is a bad metaphor ... Perhaps a ditch? No that's a bad place to ... Forget that. Remember when you were a kid and you were able to giggle until you cried ... It's more like that but we are adults and we get paid to play and no one gets to tell us when we have to goto bed ... Really that's as good as it gets!" Find out more at thehifi.ca |

We just can't get enough of Hugh Fraser and
his fabulous band so for our 20th Anniversary, we've invited him back

Determined to devote his life to music at the age of 6 as a drummer, Hugh added the trombone and piano to his instrumental arsenal to complete the musical circle of rhythm, melody and harmony allowing his creative voice to expand exponentially through composition, both written and improvised. With a stellar line-up of Hugh Fraser, trombone/piano, Campbell Ryga, saxes, Bill Runge, saxes, Ken Lister, bass, Blaine Wikjord, drums. RUMBA
CALZADA SATURDAY STREET FESTIVAL EVENT : June 20: 4:00pm included in wristband price of $20 |
|
This Vancouver Septet, led by Philippino-Canadian
Raphael Geronimo, shares a common bond; passion for Afro-Cuban rhythms.
Individually the players reflect Vancouver's cultural mosaic, sprouting
from a diversity of cultural backgrounds. Rumba Calzada's take on Latin
music is also reflective of its locale. The equatorial heat of their percussion-driven
sound simmers with the "cool" of West Coast jazz. Each member of Rumba Calzada is a true student of the form. Raphael himself learned the intricacies of Afro-Cuban percussion at the "Foclorico Nacional de Cuba". The vibes, keys and horn arrangements defy the percussive pull beneath and seem to float breezily above. Featuring the full 7 piece line up with leader Raphael Geronimo, percussionist, composer and instructor, Allan Johnston, bass, Rolando Preza, cogas/vocalist, Lou Mastroianni, piano, Brian Harding, trombone, Nick Apivor, vibraphone, Oliver Santamaria, lead vocals. " guaranteed to move your feet and reach your soul" -Latin Beat Magazine (Los Angeles) A great way to get up move your body to end our day on the street. MIMOSA WINEGARDEN PARK: Sunday June 21: 3:30pm : free |
|
A perfect way to close the day
in Winegarden Park is to the uplifting sounds of Mimosa with their gorgeous
melodies, quirky lyrics, incredible groove and sky-high improvisations.
The Mimosa sound has a marked Parisian flavour, with silky vocals from
Rebecca Shoichet, sly keyboards and occasional accordion from leader Anna
Lumière, sinuous flute and saxes from Karen Graves, and rock-solid
drumming by Berni Arai. This is another combination of Vancouver and Sunshine Coast musicians who draw from Jazz, Brazilian Sambas, French 60s pop and Cabaret music to concoct their own sound. It's nearly impossible not to be charmed by the Mimosa delights. Bring the whole family and enjoy. mimosamusic.com |
